RUTH'S HOUSE

Ruth's House is perched on a high plateau overlooking the Hudson River Valley. At 2,500 square feet, the house is an ideal if not compact expression of a weekend retreat. The single-story form and architecture are built around the basic spaces that help to engage its breathtaking site: covered terrace, screen porch, and walls of glass with big doors that connect the open plan to the landscape. At the heart of the house is a very bespoke and efficient open kitchen — the living/working domain for the owner, an acclaimed author, food critic, and cook. The kitchen is not merely a high functioning machine, but a place of making and socializing. Though not the geographic center of the house, it is the metaphoric center to be shared with the family, guests and an expansive landscape.
