DAVIS MUSEUM CHAIRS

The design of seating for the Davis Museum at Wellesley College began as part of a collaboration with the Davis curators and sound designer Kevin Brown for an installation by composers Peter Gilbert and Karola Obermuller. AW–ARCH initially designed seating capable of multiple arrangements within a small cone of sound where six unique compositions are played.

The Davis later commissioned Anmahian Winton to expand upon the design and reconsider ways that seating could be used throughout the museum. Each piece of furniture is a kit of parts made of a digitally milled maple pedestal, felt upholstery, and stainless steel armature. The parts can be easily configured to work as a single seat, a bench, a stool, and a couch, depending on the location in the museum.
